    Introduction :

Horses subject to intense exercise are at particularly high risk of gastric ulcers.

    -

    Aim :

To assess the effects of a specific feed on gastric ulcers:

    - Scientific study 2016 : Trotters during training J.Dauvillier, E Van Erck, AVEF 2016, Reims.

    - Scientific study 2018 : Top level sport horses E Van Erck, 2018.

STUDIES LED BY A TEAM OF VETERINARIANS SPECIALISING IN INTERNAL MEDICINE
    (EQUINE SPORTS MEDICINE PRACTICE)

Dr Emmannuelle Van Erck, who studied at the ECEIM, is a renowned European specialist in equine internal medicine. She gives regular conferences around the world and has published over 50 scientific articles.

    Material and Methode :

2016 Study: Monitoring French trotters in mid race season.

2018 Study: Monitoring show jumping horses at a top level stable.

During these studies, the horses continued their training, competitions and races.

These horses, subject to strenuous exercise, were fed with a special feed for 8 weeks for Study 1, and 5 weeks for Study 2.

The veterinarians performed gastroscopic examinations of all horses at the start and end of the study.

    MONITORING CHANGES IN OVERALL

HEALTH OF THE STOMACH MUCOSA .

Gastric endoscopy was used to monitor the mucosa in the glandular

and non-glandular gastric mucosa of the stomach.

They scored the severity of any lesions

    seen according to their seriousness.

The combined total score was used to assess

the overall health of the mucosa.

    Advanced ulcer

    RESULTS OF THE STUDIES

    -

Reduction in number of stomach lesions

    (2018 Study)

    Significant decrease in

    number of stomach lesions.

    -

Improve in total lesion score of the stomach.

    (2016 and 2018 Studies)

    Significant improvement in total lesion

    score of the stomach.

    -

Improvement in lesion score for the non-glandular stomach mucosa

    (Etude 2018)

    Significant improvement

    in total lesion score for

    the non-glandular stomach mucosa.

    -

Reduction in hyperkeratosis score of the stomach

    (2018 Study)
